Description

Produced in the heart of Portugal’s acclaimed Bairrada DOC, Casa de Saima Tonel-10 offers a fresh, modern expression of the indigenous Baga grape. While traditional expressions of this variety can be fiercely tannic in their youth, Tonel 10 reveals a slightly lighter, remarkably approachable style without sacrificing the authentic character that fine Bairrada red wine is celebrated for.

Tasting Profile & Key Details

  • Grape Variety: 100% Baga
  • Region: Bairrada DOC, Portugal
  • Style: Medium-bodied, fresh, and expressive red wine
  • Winemaking: Hand-selected grapes, foot-trodden in open lagares, aged 12 months in large oak vats (Tonel 10)

To soften the grape’s firm natural structure, Miranda ages this cuvée for 12 months in a single, large, seasoned wooden vat: Tonel Number 10. Historically reserved for the estate’s top Garrafeira bottlings, this gentle maturation yields a supple, food-friendly red bursting with crunchy red berries, subtle earthiness, and elegant acidity.

The Heritage of Casa de Saima

Founded in 1940, Casa de Saima remains a beacon for artisan winemaking in central Portugal. Estate owner Graça Miranda thoughtfully balances ancient traditions with progressive techniques. Red grapes are hand-harvested from ancient, low-yielding vines in the famed Vinha da Corga plot—planted on classic clay-limestone soils—before undergoing traditional foot-treading and natural fermentation in open stone lagares.
